Three Months

Scarlett is three months old today.  On October 16, we welcomed our beautiful girl to the world.  I asked the nurses to change the ID label on Scarlett's bed to show "3 Months" instead of "2 Months 14 days" from her admission.  She is growing and changing every day, despite the trauma of surgery and hospitalization.

Tomorrow marks one full month since Scarlett's tumor was identified.  One month since our baby was considered healthy and normal. What a month it has been.  She was home for 6 days in the last month; 24 in the hospital. 5 MRIs, 2 CT scans, 5 EEGs, 3 surgeries.

But we have had great progress already this morning.  She was extubated (the breathing tube removed) a few minutes ago. She had one annoying IV removed from her kicky foot.  We got a report that she has had no seizures in the last 24 hours, so the EEG contraption will be removed.  I have heard rumors of catheters, arterial lines and CSF drains getting removed, but I am not going to count on it until I see it happen.

Here's to another month!

I have been thinking about that since Friday as I hold my 4-month old grandson. In less than one month, how much you all have been through. Reminds the rest of us how quickly things can change; first for the worst, and then for the better. Never take things for granted. We can see where Scarlett gets her strength and her will to survive. You will always be in my thoughts and prayers to continue to grown strong, in health and as a family. Happy birthday, baby girl.

  49. Scarlett is amazing! I've been following your journey for the past few weeks (via the Bump), holding my breath and praying that she come through this. What a miracle and a fighter she is!

I'm a fellow October mom - or I should have been. My due date was 10/20. My son showed up 4 months early (June 28) and spent the first 4.5 months of his life in the NICU, enduring many surgeries, and many of the life-saving contraptions that your daughter is also enduring. I've seen an amazing fighting spirit from many of the babies in the NICU, and now I'm seeing it from your daughter as well. The situation is not nearly the same, but has brought back many memories for me, and I'm cheering her on with everything I have.

I pray she continues to fight. I pray that the two of you continue to have strength to advocate and to be there for her. I pray that the miracle continues and that by her first birthday this is all behind you and you are enjoying your healthy daughter. Happy three months, Scarlett! You amaze me!

  55. good for you guys!!! I just stumbled upon your blog and I have tears in my eyes. I want to scoop up your little tough bundle of joy and give her a big snuggle! She reminds me so much of my youngest at that age and my heart aches for the fears you have had to endure. Good news is, the breathing tube is out and THAT is HUGE! (I used to be a NICU respiratory therapist before I had babies of my own). I am sending you three all the love I can and I hope that Scarlett continues to heal and get stronger and stronger and that you can finally take her home permanently soon!

  56. I'm so happy to hear that she continues to do well and thank you so much for the continued updates. You all are such great parents to Scarlett, maybe that is why she ended up with you all as her parents. It gives my heart joy to read that she improves, she's such a little fighter, so strong. I'm in awe of her indeed and you all as parents. Bless you all. I continue to pray, send positive thoughts and visualize her happy, healthy and unscathed by this.

  65. With this post I just realized that Scarlett is exactly one year younger than my Lilly. I think about what we were doing at our house when she was 3 months old and how hard I thought the whole thing was. Your story is incredible. If nothing else it makes a whole world of people count their blessings, and hopefully send some prayers and good thoughts your way while they do it.

Thank you so much for sharing so much of this very personal story with us. I love hearing the updates and find myself googling the terms and equipment that you tell us about.

Congrats on all your progress so far. I know a year from know when Scarlett is 15 months you'll be going through the same things with her that I am with Lilly right now. She'll come out of this beautifully because she has so many people looking out for her, and wonderful parents that are doing everything they can for her.

Good luck with all you do.
