WOW! You guys are amazing and so wonderful to have as a support. We had over 100,000 views yesterday as people were checking in on Scarlett's surgery. That is UNBELIEVABLE.
Last night, we saw her in PICU and she was doing very well. She was very swollen and pale, but looked okay overall. She has tons of lines in and out - PICC in upper arm, arterial blood pressure on foot, IV on other foot, pulse ox on hand, blood pressure cuff, catheter, respirator in her mouth, and - most absurd - a drain coming out of her head for cerebrospinal fluid. She is also getting blood to continue replacing what was lost in surgery. Her head is bandaged, but it mostly looks like a beanie hat. However, I did see her little head today and the difference is amazing; the dark, bulging veins are gone, the bruising is lighter and her biopsy site, which was bulging off the side of her head, is now flat. The pressure is released, and that was the most critical immediate need.
Despite the way she looks, she is definitely still herself in there. She is kicking her least-restrained foot, and her toes curl around our fingers when we touch her. She tightens her little hands around our fingers and tries to open her eyes every once in a while. Her little heart rate skyrockets every time the nurses move her around; this is exactly what she did before, except it was accompanied by screaming. That's my girl!
Since she was sedated and asleep, we decided it was best to go home and rest and shower last night while we had a chance. While we were there, we got to see some of the precious and wonderful gifts we have received. While Scarlett was in surgery, she got a flower arrangement that was a yellow smiley face. We saw it being delivered when we went for lunch, thought it was so cute, and then were shocked to see it was for her! She also received a lovely pink fleece prayer shawl blankie from a church in Alabama. At home, we had a beanie knit from home-spun angora - can't wait to put it on instead of the bandages. Then, there was a whole basket of goodies from my coworker Devon - magazines, books, chocolate, popcorn, a DVD...we're set for a day at least! :-)
Once we oohed and aahed over everything, I had a glass of wine...and nearly passed out, I was so tired. The constant rush of adrenaline I have been running on finally ceased for a short time and I slept well.
Now we're learning the ropes in PICU. This is much different than when she was in PICU before, since she was still "normal" then. Then, she was just having vitals monitored, blood work and tests. Now, she is one of the more serious cases in the unit. This unit is secured; we have to buzz to get in. Everyone must handwash and sanitize at the door. It's a very high-risk unit, so they are extremely cautious. She has her own nurse who is constantly draining, cleaning, adjusting, injecting and generally puttering around her bed. There is no food, no drinks, no phones, no computers allowed in PICU. This poses a serious lifestyle change for Chris and I, even compared to what we have done in the hospital the last few weeks. We're taking turns trying to respond to the tons of messages we receive, calling family and remembering to eat while the other sits with Scarlett. We are expecting to be in PICU for at least two more weeks, so we're trying to find ways to get comfortable and try to make the best of it.

So glad to hear she is kicking her legs and doing so well! It must be so reassuring to see her normal traits show through while she just had such major surgery! It is awesome that you can already see improvements in her swelling and her brusing is going away! I will continue keeping Scarelett and you and your family in my thoughts!
Stephanie

Like so many others, I found your blog through BBC and I have been so touched by your story. I go to bed at night praying for Scarlett and wake up thinking of her. I visit your site constantly and am so grateful that you continue to update even in the midst of the chaos that has become your life. You are truly amazing people. I am so happy that Scarlett's first surgery was successful, but I know that the prayers cannot stop as you have a long road ahead of you. I am lifting you up daily, praying for healing for Scarlett and continued strength for the most courageous parents I have ever encountered. May God bless you and keep you. Colleen Allen

Amazing! So glad she's doing well! Many prayers are coming your way from Ga!
Relieved to hear that she is doing so well post-op. I can't imagine the relief you felt seeing the visible difference in her now that so much of the tumor is gone. I am really looking forward to when you can hold her again. I'm praying for continued strength for you, Chris and both of your families and that Scarlett continues to be strong.
We are still praying here in South Dakota, with no plans to stop! Way to go, Scarlett--you are an inspiration!
Been following you from The Bump... thinking of your family and your little sweetheart. Thank goodness for great news and hopefully a continued recovery and a bright horizon.
*hugs*
I am so glad to see such a great update, considering the circumstances. A little rest will go a long way for mom and dad!
How wonderful you can see your fiesty baby Scarlett underneath, just waiting to come out!!! I bet she will be full of it once some of the tubes get taken out, watch out mom and dad!
Lots of love to you all, once again!
Hang in there mama and daddy, don't forget to take care of yourselves. Try to rest and eat as much as you can. I know from experience there are probably times that you would rather throw up and sleep is out of the question. I am so glad that things are going okay right now, one day at a time. Continued prayers and hugs to you all.
So glad to hear! We will continue to pray for miss Scarlett and for the two of you. I admire your strength through this experience. Y'all are doing great. Hugs and prayers.

found your story on Babycenter and just wanted to let you know that we are praying for you! Baby Scarlett has been in my prayers daily since I read her story last week. I have been praying for the Dr's to make the right decisions and to guide their hands as they operate. I am so sorry for what you and your baby have to go through.

I'm so glad to hear that the surgery went well. My prayers are with your family, you are such strong people to go through this. Just remember, everything will turn out the way it was meant to, even if we don't know why horrible things like this happen to good people.
During times like these, I know it must be hard not to just be mad at the world, and at God, but just remember that everything happens for a reason, and please just don't give up. Your family is an inspiration, and gives all of us strength and makes us realize how lucky we are.
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family, from the bottom of my heart.
I continue to pray for you, your husband and Scarlett, I think about you 3-4 times a day, some days more. Your story, strength, and love has touched my life and Just know that God has blessed you for every day Scarlett continues to be strong. Between your blog here, the Scarlett's Miracle FB page and thebump.com... Scarlett was everywhere yesterday. I hope you know that. We, (my son and I), wore red for her yesterday, and will do so again next week when she is in the surgeon's hands.
I am so glad that she is responding well, post-surgery. I know that was a big worry of everyone; you, your fans and supporters, and your medical staff.
She's a strong little girl, and she gets that from you and your families; and all the love and support from around the world only makes it better.
We'll continue to think of you all until she is completely "out of the woods." Much love from my family, to yours. You all are doing so great! <3
Scarlett and your family have occupied my thoughts and been a reason for my constant prayer for days. I honestly can't remember a time when I prayed so much and so hard for one person. My 5 year old keeps asking about "the cute butterfly baby" :) Your update has made my day. And our family will keep on praying... Gods blessings to you all.
We also must have checked in at least 20 times over here in the Garrett household. We all wore red for Scarlett yesterday and waited anxiously to hear how she was doing with the long surgery! Soooo, glad to hear she did well. Praise God for that! And praises to Him also for the immediate changes that you can observe. God is so faithful and it is wonderful to see that He is answering our prayers and performing miracles as we all stand by and wait! Hugs from all of us. We will keep praying. Sylvia, Jeff, Kristiana and Jake
I'm so glad you got to rest and that she is resting too. I love the updates, but please don't overextend yourselves keeping us updated. If you need a break from returning messages and writing updates, take one. You deserve it.
Its so great to hear good news for your precious Scarlett! We are definitely praying for you guys. Sounds like you have your hands full but know that you have so many people on your side.
May God continue to bless your family with more great news for the days to follow.
My heart breaks everytime I think of what you are going through. Its funny that other parents connect so much when a child is sick. I cry everytime I read one of your posts and I pray for Scarlett. I am so glad she is going well(as well as can be expected I guess.) I will continue to pray for her and for God to give her to you healthy. I also pray that God will help you both in your long journey to heal your daughter. She is beautiful and quite a blessing. Thank you for allowing Scarlett to touch all of our lives. Prayers from Pennsylvania.
Hey guys,
We have been following closely and have been continuously keeping you in our thoughts.
Stay strong and we are here is you need anything at all!
That's 100,000 prayers being said for Ms. Scarlett! Praying that doctors are able to remove the remaining 20% during the next surgery and that they can get clean margins leaving her cancer free!
What a fighter! Fabulous to hear she is responding so well! We are continuing to pray for her here in Anchorage, Alaska. Thank you for the updates, Your days are so full already, I know I appreciate the time you take out of your day to update on Scarlett. May God continue to watch over you and your precious girl and hold you close and calm your hearts.

I couldn't imagine what you are going through but I pray that it comes to an end sometime soon. I love all 3 of you so much. May God continue to watch over all of you and continue to bring miracles.
praying for you all
Don't worry about updating people. We know Scarlett is priority number 1. We understand that we will be updated if and when there is time. I hope you don't see seizures. My daughter had three tonic clonic seizures on the third day after surgery. The doctors gave her a type of oral vallium to calm her down and she was fine. Glad she is doing well and you are already seeing some positive physical signs.
I am so happy to hear that she is doing so well..and is responding good. How heartwarming to hear she is kicking her legs and that she tightens her fingers around yours.I am praying and thinking of your little butterfly daily..My son is the same age..and it takes tremendous strenth and courage for you guys to go through this.God is watching your little girl..she is doing great!!
Just want you to know I am out here thinking of Scarlett and your family. I am so glad she is doing well and so glad you were able to get some rest too. Your daughter's strength is amazing. take care and know that all of the good thoughts and prayers will not stop! I am also an Oct 2010 mommy from BCC
You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers!I know firsthand how scary a situation like this is.My daughter was born with a heart defect in September and is still in the hospital,2 hours away from home.Hang in there. It sounds like your little girl is fighting hard-God has big plans for her!
My oldest spent around 20 days in the PICU (35 total in the hospital) during the course of 5 surgeries and 3 stays. Here are a few tips I have learned that may help you:
1.) get out together with your husband when you can. It may seem selfish to just leave but getting out is very necessary and it gives you the energy to go back and face what you are going though.
2.) If she's sedated, she very well may move and thrash about. Its scary and sometimes you may have to hold her still (so she doesn't rip out ivs or breathing tube). My son did this a lot. He would be on 3 sedatives at once and added injects of ativan trying to keep him from moving so much. If it's a problem, suggest using a paralytic to keep her still. They can then monitor her on eeg to make sure she isn't coming around and startled by the inability to move.
3.) Gas pains are easily dealt with since she has an NG or probably now a TPT tube. Open the line and use a needless syringe to pull up the air in her stomach or intestines. Repeat as needed.
4.) Get to know your nurse. He or she will be your first line of defense. They'll go to bat with the doctors who sometimes forget that the patient may need more the normal protocol.
5.) Bathtime is generally around 3am. If you're there for it, you can usually help out and touch her a little bit more than you're getting to now.
(cont. from above)
Good luck. Your story has captivated my family and we are pulling for Scarlett. It takes me back to a place I don't often go. One day the trauma of this experience will be a very distant memory. I hope and pray for Scarlett to beat the odds.
My little girl is 16 months, but I can't imagine being in your shoes!! Scarlett is a beautiful strong little girl and I just know she'll be okay. My little one and I will keep her in our prayers!!! I don't know you but we here in Lander love you guys!
So glad to hear she is doing well after such complicated surgery, we'll keep praying and hope that the surgery next week will go just as well!!!
I am thinking of you all. Our son had open heart surgery when he was only five days old. It's not the brain but it's still a vital part of the body so I totally know what you are going through.
So glad to hear that Scarlett is doing okay. I hope all continues to go well for you all. best wishes to you all and that beautiful little girl!
Prayers are being sent your way from our family. God Bless. You're baby girl is beautiful & inspiring <3
I was relieved to hear she made it through surgery and is stable. We continue to pray.for you all every day. Get some rest you are all so strong. Thoughts and prayers are with you.
I am so glad that things continue to go so well! Still praying for you all!
Oh this makes me so happy to hear that she is being her spunky fighter self! I feel that I can rest easy I was praying so hard and think about Scarlett very often as I go throughout the day watching my little princess. Rest up and stay strong.
I am so glad to hear that she is doing well! Today was a crazy day for me and my little one I have been waiting all day to check for an update, and I am so glad to see it is a good one! I will pray tonight for Scarlett. Tonight I will pray that she is comfortable in recovery and that she does not have any seizures. God Bless. Love, thoughts and prayers from an Oct 2010 Mommy in Vermont <3
Thinking and praying for you from Cape Cod Mass. She seems like such a strong little girl and is lucky to have such loving, caring parents. Stay strong.
One more internet stranger but I want you to know that Scarlet and your fam. have been in my prayers, I even told the people in our prayer group, we might never meet each other but there is no distance for God.
So happy to hear the good news! May each day be one step closer to going home :-)
Thanking God for this!!! You two are a remarkable example of strong, hopeful, loving parents!! Not only are you blessed to have such a beautiful miracle of a baby, but she is SO blessed to have you two!!
I was so touched that you bothered to send a thank you note for my donation, but honestly, my first thought was "why are they wasting time emailing total strangers when there are more important things for them to do?!" So please, while your little one is recovering, spend some time recovering yourself. Don't worry about answering all those emails or writing lengthy blogs. Feel free to go off the grid. I am extremely happy that your LO is doing so well! Now go take care of yourselves and each other. I grant you permission! Hang in there! You are both doing great! :-)
Oh I'm so glad she's doing so well, what a fighter! I thought of all of you all day yesterday and was a frequent visitor to your blog! Your story is so touching & it makes me respect and admire you all so much! Thank God for the miracle named Scarlett! She is teaching so many of us the strength & power of love! I will continue to pray for Scarlett and her family through this difficult journey!

Wonderful news!
Hi there! I'm a member of the Oct 2010 birth board and have been reading your story since you started posting. I have a shop called "Luckey Thirteen" where I make crocheted goods. I have made a little hat with a scarlet flower and a scarlet blanket for your little angel :) I don't know how you feel about giving out your address to someone you don't know but my email address is KariBundy13@yahoo.com if you would like to email me, and you can see my etsy shop at luckeythirteen.etsy.com :) My username on babycenter is MommaBundy.
We are continuing to pray for sweet little Scarlett!! <3
Amazing girl, wonderful parents and a fantastic medical team. Your family will continue to be in my thoughts.
I am so glad to hear she is doing well! Your little fighter has moved so mane people (and you have over 100'000 views yesterday as proof of that!) Yesterday when it was time for her surgery I said a long prayer for her and I began to cry, I have a little baby too and it breaks my heart to try and fathom what you and your family must be going through right now. I will keep praying and reading your updates.

I've been reading this blog since it started. Brandi, your Dad is the Skipper of the Sea Scout group my son Sean is in. We are all so happy she is doing so well and will continue to pray constantly for Scarlett and all your family. I have many relatives I forwarded this to in Ireland and they are all saying rosaries, prayers and novena's regularly. My uncle is a priest and he is including Scarlett in masses everyday. She is one really special little girl and we have all fallen for her. You are both the bravest parents I ever heard of and you deserve only the best outcome. My favorite pic of her is when she is laying on a white fur like blanket, she is asleep and she has this beautiful angelic smile. It makes me smile, cry and pray more everyday. Thank you for keeping us informed. With all you are going through you really are amazing which is why you have such an amazing, beautiful, strong baby Scarlett. God bless all of you. Eileen Morgan & Much family
I am so happy to have read this morning that the first round of surgery went well. You are both so amazingly strong. You already know this, but the impact that your precious baby girl has had on so many people is astounding. Yesterday was my birthday and I posted a link to your blog and just asked everyone to wear red and pray for you both, Scarlett and the doctors. The power of prayer is an awesome thing. You are all truly amazing people, not to mention so strong willed! Brandi and Chris, take care of yourselves and continue to keep your heads up for your beautiful daughter. She is loved by so many!
I don't even really know what to say, except your family and daughter is stronger than I could ever imagine. I am keeping all of you in my prayers.
My little one and I pray for Scarlett every night, and though what she has been through is terrible it is wonderful to see her progressing and improving so much after surgery! We have hope, love and lots of faith for your family and feel so blessed that you are willing to share Scarlett's story with us. God bless!
Sending continued thoughts and prayers your way from a stranger in Wisconsin!!! GO SCARLETT!!!
your daughter is meant to do big things in this world and she is already doing that by connecting so many strangers around the world. she is lighting the world up and i know she is going to grow up to be an inspirational woman. prayers and love from Marina del Rey
This is the beginning of a very long road ahead. Stay strong! Love your fighting spirit!
Aloha,
